JAMB Syllabus for French 2025/2026

  1. Written Comprehension in French (general and emergent interest topics, e.g., love, life, death, politics, marriage, health, communication, child trafficking, cultism, travel, corruption, money laundering, etc).
  2. Principles Governing the Structure and Use of Written French (Identification of basic form classes, Assessment of vocabulary span, Importance of word order, Identification and application of basic processes in language structure, Use of French in set expressions such as in proverbs, idioms, and conventional structures as provided for in common speech acts).
  3. Workings of French sounds (sound discrimination, letter-sound correspondence, syllabification, liaison, sense groups in reading, faux amis, identification of sounds to determine similarity).
  4. Culture and Civilization {Characteristics (aspects, similarities, and differences) of the educational system, socio-economic life, political organization, and cultural life of Francophone Africa and France, with reference (where possible) to home country, i.e., Nigeria}.

This JAMB French Syllabus guides all candidates who register to sit for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) on the English language content to be tested in the examination.

The examination is designed to test candidates’ knowledge of any and every aspect of the syllabus developed for French. Therefore, candidates for the UTME are expected to have adequate knowledge of the entire syllabus of the English Language subject.

Particular attention must be paid to recommended books and literature for some subjects, as questions based on such references will be set in the 2025 JAMB UTME.

To encourage the culture of reading, a compulsory recommended book is usually sold to every candidate at the point of registration. The content of the book is tested as part of the questions in French, which is compulsory for every candidate.
